On 8 June 2024, Moor Park in Preston was transformed into a challenging, mud‑filled obstacle course as Tough Mudder arrived in the city, and I had the privilege of photographing the event alongside members of the Preston Photographic Society.

More than just an endurance challenge, the event was about community, resilience, and raising vital funds for Cancer Research UK. With hundreds of participants taking on the course, including my own children, the day was packed with emotion, determination, and moments that deserved to be captured.

Moor Park is one of Preston’s most iconic green spaces, and on this occasion it provided the perfect backdrop for Tough Mudder’s signature obstacles. From water‑soaked crawls to teamwork‑driven climbs, the course pushed participants both physically and mentally.

As an event photographer in Preston, Moor Park offers fantastic variety, open green spaces, mature trees, elevation changes, and dramatic sightlines.

On the day, these elements combined with mud, water, and raw effort to create powerful visual storytelling opportunities.

Photographing Tough Mudder with the Preston Photographic Society was a brilliant collaborative experience. With photographers positioned around the course, we were able to document:

  • The intensity of the obstacles
  • The teamwork between participants
  • The determination etched on faces mid‑challenge
  • The joy and relief at the finish line
Event photography like this is about more than technical skill.
 
It’s about anticipating moments, reacting quickly, and telling the story of the day through images that feel authentic and human.

What made the day especially meaningful for me was seeing my own children take part in the event, raising a significant amount of money for Cancer Research UK.

Watching them push themselves, support others, and cross the finish line was incredibly moving. Photographing Tough Mudder wasn’t just about documenting an event, it became a personal record of courage, compassion, and community spirit.

Photographing Tough Mudder  was an unforgettable experience, both professionally and personally. It brought together my passion for photography, community events, and storytelling, all in support of a cause that truly matters.
