Grassroots Football Through the Lens

More Than Just Football

There are loads of football teams out there, but not many feel quite like Atletico Warton.

There’s something special about grassroots football. No big crowds, no spotlight, just a group of lads turning up each week to play the game they love.

At its core, it’s simple: turn up, have a kickabout, and spend time with your mates. No pressure, no judgement, just football the way most of us fell in love with it in the first place.

That’s exactly what I found when I spent time photographing Atletico Warton.

Based in Lancashire, it’s more than just a football team. It’s a community, a place where football brings people together, whether that’s for fitness, mental health, or just the chance to switch off and enjoy the game. And that’s what really sets it apart: it’s about so much more than football.

Football, community and mental health

Atletico Warton is built around a simple idea — creating a space where people can turn up, play, and feel part of something.

  • No pressure
  • No expectations
  • Just a game, and a group of lads looking out for each other

Whether it’s a midweek kickabout or a full 11-a-side match, the focus isn’t just on winning — it’s on connection, routine, and getting out of your own head for a bit.

You can see it in the way people talk, joke, and support each other. It’s relaxed, but it matters.

"The thing about football – the important thing about football – is that it is not just about football."
